Frequently asked questions

Are there monthly or annual fees for EV charging at home?

No. There are no subscription fees, monthly charges, or annual costs associated with your EV home charger, the metroEV app, or participation in the EV charging at home program.

How much money can I earn from EV charging at home?

Charging more = higher total earnings.

You start earning 10¢ for every kWh delivered through your EV home charger. 

When do I get paid for EV charging at home?

 You’ll receive your payout annually, after metroEV receives the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) credits attributable to your usage.

To qualify for a payout, you must have charged at least 100 kWh during the payout period. 

What type of EV home charger will I get?

Level 2 chargers like the metroEV Smart Charger connect to a 240V outlet (we hardwire all our units), providing faster, more efficient charging speeds (40-50 km/hour), making them ideal for daily use.

Will my electrical panel support EV charging at home?

Many homes can already support a Level 2 EV home charger, especially if they have a 200A breaker. If you choose to use our preferred electrician, we'll be able to make an assessment of your electrical panel without a site visit.

Details about our preferred electrician will be available when you sign up for our program.

Does my home charging station come with a warranty?

Yes. Your home charging station includes a 3-year manufacturer's warranty.

Is the charger compatible with my EV?

Yes. We have home charging stations that are compatible with electric cars using J1772 and J3400/NACS connector types.

Do you provide installation for the home charging station?

Yes, metroEV provides the EV home charging station and professional installation from one of our preferred licensed electrical contractors.

If you already have an OCPP-compliant EV home charger, or you would prefer to use your own licensed electrician to install a metroEV home charger, you can still participate in metroEV Rewards. Fill out our quote form and we'll help with your install or configuration.

What happens if my EV home charger goes offline?

 Your home charging station will continue functioning for EV charging at home and store session data locally. Once reconnected to Wi-Fi, it syncs automatically.

If the EV home charger remains offline for more than 180 consecutive days, your deposit may be forfeited.

Can I install a EV home charger outdoors?

Absolutely. The NEMA 4-rated enclosure is built to withstand rain, snow, dust, and extreme temperatures — making it perfect for outdoor installation in your driveway, garage, or side yard.

Can I move and take my metroEV home charging station with me?

 Yes. You can relocate your EV home charger anywhere in Canada without losing your progress toward the deposit refund.

Simply update your address with metroEV to continue EV charging at home under the program. 

How long will the EV charging at home program last?

The metroEV Home Charging Program is supported through Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations and related carbon credit programs. Program availability may evolve over time based on regulatory changes. 

If there are any changes to the program, metroEV will notify all participants in advance. Your EV home charger remains yours regardless of future program changes. 

 

How do I cancel my EV home charger program?

 You can cancel your EV home charger participation at any time by contacting support.

If canceled after 30 days, return the charger for a partial deposit refund (less a $75 restocking fee). Any EV charging at home earnings will be paid out. 

Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel?

Not always. During your assessment, we'll determine whether your existing electrical service can support a new EV charger or if upgrades are recommended.
