Effective November 2025: A new pilot Call for Proposals (CFP) is now open for transportation corridor public fast charging projects in high-priority areas across Canada. ZEVIP applications are now open and are accepted until all funds are allocated, with a current notional budget of $9 million.
Apply now for the ZEVIP program.
What is ZEVIP?
The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) is a federal initiative administered by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to support the installation of EV chargers across Canada. The ZEVIP program supports the installation of EV charging infrastructure to expand access in multi-unit residential buildings, workplaces, public spaces, commercial properties, and EV fleets.
NRCan ZEVIP typically funds up to 50% of total project costs and runs through 2027, with over $1 billion invested since 2016. The ZEVIP program works with federal EV policies, including the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, which supports Canada’s goal of reaching 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035.
2025 ZEVIP Funding Update
NRCan is now accepting ZEVIP applications for a new CPF targeting public DC fast charging in high-priority areas. This CFP ZEVIP program remains open until all funds are committed.
The goal is to increase charging gaps and improve access in rural highways, remote routes, and underserved segments of major travel corridors to support long-distance EV travel within Canada.
What types of charging projects are eligible for ZEVIP?
To qualify for ZEVIP funding, projects must meet all of the following criteria.
Each site must include:
- At least one 100 kW DC fast charger, AND
- Additional EV chargers (Level 2 or 3) to reach a minimum total site output of 150 kW
All EV chargers must be:
-
Within 1.6 km of a corridor road shown on the NRCan Electric Vehicle Charging Planning Map
-
Located in a priority area rated 4 or 5 on NRCan’s map
-
Publicly accessible 24 hours per day, 7 days per week
What types of EV chargers do I have to install?
All EV chargers must:
-
Be manufactured in Canada or in a country with a trade agreement with Canada
-
Be new and purchased (not leased or refurbished)
-
Be permanent, hard-wired installations
-
Be certified for use in Canada (CSA, UL, Interlink, or equivalent)
-
Be networked and active on a charging network
-
Be used for a new installation or expansion, not to replace an existing installation
-
Use at least one of the following connectors: SAE J1772 Combo (CCS), SAE J3400 (NACS), SAE J1772 (Level 2, only if co-located with fast chargers)

How much funding can I get from ZEVIP?
The ZEVIP program will fund 50-75% of eligible project costs, with a maximum of $2 million per project. Each applicant is limited to submitting two ZEVIP applications under this new intake. The ZEVIP funding will continuously take applications until the allocated budget runs out and will be based on a first-come, first-served basis.

ZEVIP Frequently Asked Questions
Is ZEVIP funding different from Ontario EV charger rebates?
“ZEVIP funding” and “EV charger rebates” are often used interchangeably, but the NRCan program is not technically a “rebate” program. This is because you are only entitled to money back if you follow the specific NRCan process, which includes applying for funding and receiving approval from NRCan before paying for the EV charger network. That said, ZEVIP is the sole federal government funding source for EV charging installations.
When can I apply for ZEVIP funding?
metroEV is a leader in electrical solutions for property managers. We bring unbiased expertise required for any successful EV charger deployment, helping you to select the right EV charger for your needs. Our fully certified and insured electricians are here to make fast and safe installation of your EV station.
How much funding can I receive?
ZEVIP typically reimburses up to 50-75% of eligible project costs, with a max. of $2 million per project.
The total available budget is $9 million and is based on a first-come, first-served basis.
How many ZEVIP applications can I submit?
Applicants are able to submit a maximum of two ZEVIP applications for this new intake.
What counts as a “high-priority” area?
NRCan ranks corridor segments based on EV charging gaps and travel patterns.
Eligible projects are located in areas rated 4 or 5 on the Electric Vehicle Charging Planning Map.
Do all sites need at least a 100 kW charger?
Yes. Every project must include:
-
At least one 100 kW DC fast charger, and
-
Enough additional charging capacity to bring the total site output to at least 150 kW.
Can I install only Level 2 chargers?
No. Level 2 chargers are only supported when co-located with the required fast charger. The site must meet the 150 kW minimum output requirement.
Can chargers be located indoors or inside gated parking lots?
Only if they offer 24/7 public access.
Restricted-access or limited-hours charging locations are not eligible under this CFP.
