In an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, the EV industry is urging the government to maintain the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard (EVAS) during its recent 60-day policy review and the removal of the 2026 interim target.
The open letter emphasizes that EVAS is a crucial part of Canada’s industrial strategy, job creation, and clean energy innovation. The EV industry notes that the industry has already unlocked tens of billions in investment and created over 130,000 jobs, and that weakening the mandate could undermine investor confidence and slow down momentum in Canada’s EV transition. The letter highlights that EVAS also lowers transportation costs for Canadians, strengthens domestic supply chains, and ensures utilities can plan for and invest in critical upgrades needed to meet future demand.
During the course of this review, the letter calls on the government to:
Maintaining the EVAS with reasonable adjustments is essential to protect jobs, sustain long-term investment, secure Canada’s leadership in EVs, and ensure affordability for Canadian drivers.
